Man who tried to steal phone items is jailed

A 54-year-old man who stole phone accessories valued at almost $1,000 from CellularOne has been sentenced to six months in prison.

Brian Eugene Jones, of Southampton, admitted to taking the goods including earphones and a hands-free car kit totalling $1,109 in value.

Senior Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney said the items were stolen from the company's Reid Street Store around 2.45 p.m. on Monday.

A staff member alerted the manager after they saw Jones put the phone accessories into a white plastic bag he was carrying.

Jones tried to leave the store without paying for the items and the staff member called the Police. He was arrested and cautioned about the offence and told officers: "I stole the stuff because this stuff is in demand."

Jones, who has previous convictions of a similar nature, was jailed for six months by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner.
