Mechanic with child porn on his camera is remanded in custody
A pervert who stored pornographic images of a ten-year-old girl on his camera admitted to the crime and was remanded into custody.
Prosecutor Larissa Burgess told Magistrates' Court that Brownlow Alan Richardson, 56, was caught out when he loaned his camera to a friend.
The Hamilton Parish resident is a mechanic and a photographer. Ms Burgess explained that in January this year, he took pictures of a friend's baby and then gave her his camera.
When the friend went to download the pictures, she inadvertently downloaded all the other images on Richardson's camera as well. According to Ms Burgess, these included an "explicit" collage of a ten-year-old girl.
The girl had taken the images herself in May 2008.
The friend also discovered a photograph of what Ms Burgess described as an "unknown man baring his genitals".
The friend challenged Richardson over the discovery, but he had nothing to say and walked off. The friend then called the Police and handed over the laptop. They examined it and arrested Richardson, who told them the naked man was himself, and that photo was only supposed to be seen by an adult friend.
He was brought to court on Friday, where he pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography for the purposes of making it available for viewing by other persons, and making child pornography.
Richardson has no previous convictions. The maximum sentences for the crimes are three years' imprisonment and five years' imprisonment respectively.
Defence lawyer Graveney Bannister told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that Richardson has been on bail since his arrest. He said the victim took the pictures of herself on her cellphone and sent them to Richardson.
He acknowledged that the defendant should have reported this instead of keeping them in his possession. However, said Mr. Bannister, "it is not the most egregious of matters it did not go beyond the possession and making of the collage".
Mr. Warner would not entertain Mr. Bannister's application for bail for Richardson and ordered pre-sentence reports.
"People of this propensity should be detected as early as possibly if they attempt to manifest their sick pleasures by pornography," he said. "Why would I believe he will not continue to do it again if this is a sickness?"
He remanded Richardson into custody until he is sentenced in April.
