Mental illness rehabilitation expert to speak in Hamilton

An expert on the rehabilitation of people with a mental illness will launch Social Work Month this week.

Lars-Olof Ljungberg, from Sweden, will present a talk on recovery and psychosocial rehabilitation at Cathedral Hall this Wednesday.

Minister of Social Rehabilitation Neletha Butterfield will also launch the event, being held by the Bermuda National Association of Social Workers.

Mr. Ljungberg has worked in psychiatric rehabilitation and consumer movements in mental health on both sides of the Atlantic. He has also worked with WHO (World Health Organisation) and with Global Initiative in Psychiatry in Eastern Europe.

He is helping to push global psychiatric reform, and has met with leaders from around the world to discuss recovery, psychosocial rehabilitation and the development of consumer advocacy networks.

Social workers, psychologists, counsellors and other health professionals are invited to the seminar, to discuss Social Work Advocacy in Bermuda, between 12 noon and 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Refreshments are provided.
