MP will hold clinic to help people find a way out of violence
Government MP Michael Weeks will be holding a clinic on Saturday for people looking for a way out of violent life or just someone to talk to in the wake of the recent murders and shootings across the Island.
He said the clinic would have various church leaders on hand as well as people from Government agencies and will take place at Victor Scott Primary School between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
"Whether you are reaching out for help in addiction, rehabilitation and counselling services, furthering your studies in a G.E.D. programme, or just wanting to talk with someone about the struggles that you may be encountering, we have the help agencies ready and waiting to assist you," he said.
"There are also many other services being provided outside of this event by various other Government entities."
And the Pembroke East Central MP said the Government, contrary to what some critics have said, is working hard to bring an end to the unlawful activity and comfort those who have lost loved ones due to the violence
"It has also been suggested that the fears of the innocent bystanders are being ignored," he said. "And just as regrettable, is the false insinuation that we don't understand the youth involved in this activity and because of this premise things will only get worse.
"Nothing could be further from the truth. First, it must be clearly articulated, that this is not a 'them and us' issue, this is a 'we' issue, an Island issue.
"None of us entered this world as a mere adult. We all had to tread through life's peaks and valleys as a youngster, whether male or female. So, yes, my friends, we do understand!
"We understand what it means to be raised on an island that is only 21 square miles in length, four square miles in width. We understand what it means to grow up in any one of the nine parishes and to be considered different because we don't come from 'your' area.
"We understand. Why? Well, simply because if we have lived, then we have been a partaker of any one of these scenarios."
And he urged members of the community to speak out if they know someone involved in the violence.
"For this responsibility, is not limited to the few but, it is a responsibility of all, and in so doing Bermuda as we knew it, in time, will return again," he said.
