Neighbourhood blighted by dumping

Washing machines, microwaves, refrigerators and sinks — you could build a kitchen with some of the things people have dumped down a bank behind Prospect Primary School.

One person certainly seems to think the spot off Cedar Park Road makes a suitable home: he's turned an old boat which has also been left there into a makeshift bedroom.

Along with TVs, numerous broken motorcycles and rusty car parts, the area, hidden from the main road by trees, is yet another victim of fly-tipping by residents who can't be bothered to dispose of their bulky waste legally.

Devonshire North Central MP Glenn Blakeney says it's an environmental nuisance in an otherwise well-kept constituency.

"This is dangerous," said Mr. Blakeney as he pointed to the precarious-looking piles of bricks propping up the boat, in which a homeless man has been living in recent weeks.

It appears the boat was at least initially dry docked with the intention of being retrieved. Mr. Blakeney, the Environment Minister, has been in talks with its owner to see if it can be removed.

He is also hoping a gate can be installed preventing trucks cutting across the grass joining the dumping spot to Cedar Park Road, and that the Hustle Truck can help with a clean-up operation.

Fly-tipping has long been a problem across the Island, with Keep Bermuda Beautiful and the Hustle Truck regularly required to tidy up, and Ministers urging residents to take their garbage to Government's disposal sites.

Mr. Blakeney said some people don't care as long as they don't have to see the eyesore dumps themselves. "Out of sight, out of mind," he said.

Elsewhere in the constituency, some residents complained about cars which have seemingly been dumped by the side of the road — some of which young people have been sleeping in at night.

And two burned out vintage cars remain on land off Cedar Park Road as a reminder of an arson attack around a month ago.
