A scholarship fund set up in memory of a talented young sailor who died in a road crash last month now stands at $15,000, thanks to a recent donation.

Tanker fleet firm Teekay Corporation gave $5,000 to the Adam Goodwin Marine/Mentor Scholarship, which was set up by the Bermuda Sloop Foundation after the 22-year-old's death on October 3.

Mr. Goodwin, of Smith's, was an officer of the watch on the Foundation's youth training vessel Spirit of Bermuda and the scholarship fund will be used to help young Bermudian watch leaders pursue careers at sea.

Malcolm Kirkland, from the Foundation, said: "The scholarship fund has now received 50 donations totalling $15,000 and it will be awarded on a periodic basis to help educate and train other young Bermudian Spirit watch leaders to achieve world class standards in the maritime field."

Foundation chairman Alan Burland said: "Adam's spirit is very much a part of our Spirit. Adam's spirit was with us at the beginning and it is with us now.

"His life was short but his gift is long. He touched so many of us and we will remember him fondly. He contributed so much, in so little time."

Mr. Goodwin's father David said the family was pleased others would be able to follow in his son's footsteps with the help of the scholarship. The first $5,000 award will be announced at the Foundation's annual award ceremony in February.
