New Senator Bean aiming to be effective

The Premier yesterday appointed Marc Bean as a new Senator, replacing Wayne Caines who resigned to pursue a career in the private sector.

And he stressed that he was not taking the post for its 'glitter and gold'.

Sen. Bean, 34, said: "I'm not really looking for what people perceive to be the glitter and gold of being in Parliament or in Senate, I am just seeking to be effective."

Sen. Bean has replaced Mr. Caines who resigned from the position on Tuesday, after being appointed CEO of Digicel's local operations.

He will be officially sworn in on Wednesday and will be taking over responsibilities as Junior Minister of Tourism and Transport as well as Junior Minister of the Environment and Sport.

When asked about his feelings toward the appointment, Sen. Bean said: "I've been preparing myself for my entire adult life to enter into public service and during that time I've had to exercise fortitude, patience, courage and eventually it has paid off to some degree.

"I just see it as another step that's given me the opportunity to be effective to the advancement of the Bermudian people."

Though Sen. Bean is one of the younger members of Senate, he is in good company with others such as Senator Thaoo Dill and Senator Davida Morris, who have been appointed within the past two years by Premier Ewart Brown.

At a press conference yesterday, Dr. Brown said: "I'm confident in the choice that is being announced this afternoon. Marc Bean will serve his country well and make the people in his childhood Somerset neighbourhood immensely proud."

After the announcement, Sen. Bean told The Royal Gazette: "Right now all I can say is that I am seeking to be effectual and do right by the people.

"And so if I could work on a daily basis and go home at night with a clear conscience that I gave 100 percent of my heart, mind and body to the people's benefit than my job is done."

"I don't really require public accolades or anything. Satisfaction comes with knowing I can go to sleep with a pure heart," he said.

Sen. Bean is currently part of the Cabinet Office team where he is responsible for Bermuda's relationship with CARICOM.

He has also served on the Bermuda Independence Commission, the Telecommunications Commission, the Public Transportation Board, the Public Vehicle Service Licensing Board, the Air Transport Licensing Board and the West End Development Company.
