New vehicle to assist police with fighting crime

Latest addition to the fleet: the new Mobile Command Unit

It may look like a camper van on the inside but this is the latest vehicle in the fight against crime.

The new Bermuda Police Service Mobile Command Unit has landed.

Costing $117,000, it was imported from a supplier in Florida and will assist officers to investigate crime in the "more remote locations" of Bermuda. The interior includes a bed, sink, shower and cooking facilities.

A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said: "The facilities come factory-installed in the vehicle, which is designed for use in more remote locations where Police officers may need them if they are on location for extended periods of time.

"However, the BPS does not anticipate using these facilities on a regular basis."

He said the latest addition to the BPS fleet was needed because the current Mobile Command Unit is ten years old.

"Over time it had developed mechanical difficulties that would have been cost prohibitive to fix, so the decision was made to replace it with a newer vehicle," the spokesman said.

"The new Mobile Command Unit is actually smaller and more compact than its predecessor, and will be used to provide a platform to run mobile operations from in circumstances where the BPS may need to have a static presence for a period of time.

"This includes during critical incidents such as natural disasters/hurricanes, murders or anti-social behaviour, as well as more routine operations such as at Cup Match or the Exhibition at the Botanical Gardens (the Agricultural Show)."

Standard Police equipment such as radios and computers will be installed before the Mobile Command Unit becomes operational.
