Nursing complaints committee could be created

A Nursing Profession Complaints Committee could be created under amendments to the Nursing Amendment Bill 2010.

The committee would be set up to deal with complaints against nurses and nursing associates.

It would investigate allegations that "the person's registration was improperly obtained, the person is guilty of professional misconduct, the person is unfit to praise by reason of conviction or an indictable offence to adverse physical health or the person is unfit to practise or to be registered".

The committee can also investigate complaints on allegations taken place in and outside of Bermuda and at any time whether or not a time when the person was registered.

According to the act, the complaint must be made by the complainant.

It does allow for a parent or guardian to make a complaint where a child or a physically or mentally unstable person are involved. Once a complaint is made the committee must give the affected person written notice and allow them to submit, in writing, why the matter shouldn't go ahead.

Complaints that are accepted by the committee will then be referred to the Bermuda Nursing Council. Once a complaint is proved, the council determines what action to take.

It can admonish the person, suspend them from duty, strike their name off the register or impose conditions with regard to practising nursing.
