Only two people turned out to land licence meeting
An information session on land licences by the Ministry of Immigration had only two confirmed attendees, Senator David Burch said yesterday.
The Government Senate leader said residents had claimed he "would not listen to reason" however few had taken him up on his invitation to discuss the matter.
"Madame President, you will know that in response to these claims, the Ministry offered to conduct a series of information sessions for those who wished to attain more knowledge on registering their land.
"You will also know that the first of these was scheduled for Thursday, July 22 and persons were asked to reserve their space.
"Madame President, how many people do you think responded? Unfortunately, in spite of all the criticism, there were [only] two responses from lawyers who are friends of the Ministry legal consultant."
Sen. Burch said despite the poor registration, if enough people show interest, his Ministry will schedule another information session.
Information can also be found by clicking on 'land acquisition' on www.immigration.gov.bm, or by calling 297-7819.
Bermudians married to foreigners have until December 31 to become compliant with the Bermuda Immigration and Protection Act 2007.
Sen. Burch said he has seen an increase in the number of Bermudian spouses applying for Bermuda status since the extension.
"This confirms our belief that several persons qualify for status and thus do not require a licence but had just failed to apply.
"I encourage those who hold registered land to also surrender their licences once status has been granted," he added.
