PLP celebrating ten years in power

Premier Dr. Ewart F. Brown and former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith visited George Welch of St. George’s who celebrated his 100th birthday on October 13th, 2008. Mr. Welch was born in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. He moved to Bermuda in 1929. In 1973, he became one of the first black men in Bermuda to hold the post of Pilot/Harbourmaster. Premier Brown and Dame Jennifer presented Mr. Welch with a birthday cake.

In honour of its tenth anniversary of coming to power, the Progressive Labour Party is asking branches to help pensioners on Saturday. The event is one of a series planned to mark the landmark victory culminating in a gala black-tie banquet on November 15.

The keynote speaker for the November 15 banquet at the Fairmont Southampton is congressman George Kenneth (GK) Butterfield who represents the 1st district of North Carolina in the US Congress.

Rep. Butterfield, the son of a Bermudian dentist who emigrated to the US and was also a successful politician, maintains contact with his relatives here and retains a deep affection for the Island and her people. A PLP statement added: "Party officials have asked each of their branches to provide a service or act of kindness for a senior in their constituencies on November 1.

"This is in recognition of the loyalty and support the Party received since its inception when success at the polls almost seemed like an impossible dream."

On November 8, the PLP will embrace the whole family at a fun-filled block party on Court Street with games, entertainment and vendors. On November 9, the actual date of the 1998 victory, Party members will attend the St. Paul's AME Church to give thanks for the past and seek guidance for the future. Following the service they will go to the BIU for lunch.

The group will then head to the Liberty Theatre to view a video presentation highlighting memorable moments, and hearing the perspectives of the leaders relating to the decade.
