PLP Ministers back Sen. Marc Bean

PLP Ministers yesterday spoke out in support of their candidate for the forthcoming by-election in Southampton West Central.

Senator Marc Bean, Junior Minister for Tourism, Transport, Environment and Sport, will run against the Opposition's Charlie Swan, who was criticised at the weekend by former UBP leader Wayne Furbert. Environment and Sport Minister El James said working with Sen. Bean was a delight. "He's a hard worker and he brings a unique perspective to the job.

"His knowledge of the community and the needs of young people, in particular, is quite impressive."

Culture and Social Rehabilitation Minister Dale Butler, who worked with Sen. Bean on the Mirrors Programme, agreed: "The Mirrors Programme is such a success due to the hard work of people like Marc Bean," he said.

PLP chairman David Burt said: "Sen. Bean is a rising star in the PLP.

"He's a leader and an outspoken advocate on behalf of Bermuda's young people and he's taken a leadership role in the PLP's comprehensive plan to crack down on crime."

Mr. Burt said he agreed with Mr. Furbert's assessment of Sen. Swan: "As a member of the Senate, Charlie Swan has had a number of opportunities to step up and lead. But Charlie hasn't led on a single issue."

Sen. Swan fought off interest from former leader Michael Dunkley, Jeff Sousa, Wayne Scott and Roderick Simons to fight the contest. UBP leader Kim Swan said he was nothing less than "a very good and high quality candidate".

The December 4 by-election was called after UBP MP Jon Brunson resigned due to work commitments.
