Police have video of gang fight, but make further appeal
Police have video footage of the huge gang-fight in St. David's on Sunday night that involved up to 100 men armed with knives, machetes and baseball bats.
Issuing a fresh appeal for help to bring the culprits to justice yesterday, Chief Inspector Antoine Daniels of the Serious Crime Unit revealed that other videos shot on cell-phones and camcorders may also be out there and the Police want them.
Two men were taken to hospital with stab wounds after the clash which began near Clearwater Beach and ended up at St. David's Cricket Club. One remains in the hospital, although his injuries are not life-threatening.
Mr. Daniels believes the mass brawl involved rivals from the 42 Crew from the St. Monica's Road area, and the Parkside gang from the Middletown / Parson's Road area. Reports that a gun was fired remain unconfirmed.
The detective said one factor sparking the clash may have been the the stabbing on Friday night of a Parkside affiliate at Devonshire Recreation Club, where there were also allegations of a shot being fired. The victim was treated in hospital and released.
"One of the main messages is we've had some good assistance from witnesses but we want to make a further appeal," said Mr. Daniels.
"We want to hear from anyone who might have been in the St. David's or Southside areas on Sunday evening and might have seen anything, heard anything, or have pictures or footage. Witnesses there saw people recording with cell phones and camcorders."
Seven men were charged yesterday with taking part in the riot, pleaded not guilty, and were bailed ahead of a Magistrates' Court trial. Mr Daniels said further charges are anticipated in relation to others.
Meanwhile, high-visibility Police patrols and the use of stop-and-search powers are being employed in a bid to halt further violence. Mr. Daniels also appealed to licensed premises and local residents to contact the Police if they spot large groups congregating and sense trouble might be brewing.
Anyone with information that could assist the riot investigation should call Chief Insp. Daniels at the Serious Crime Unit on 299-8115, Sergeant Jason Smith 293 2222, or the confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 1-800-623-8477.
