Police offer safety tips for visitors

The sailors who had their bags snatched on three occasions are the latest in a string of victims targeted while riding rental cycles.

Over the space of a week from April 22 to April 29, there were four cases of bags taken from rental cycle baskets, and one attempt to take one.

A Police spokesman said: "All of the incidents occurred during the hours of darkness, mostly in the western parishes with the exception of the attempt which occurred in Devonshire.

"We are unable to say at this time whether the same culprits were involved with these recent incidents."

He added: "It is always unfortunate whenever visitors experience this type of crime, particularly in this case as these visitors appear to have been targeted more than once.

"The Bermuda Police Service works in conjunction with the rental cycle companies to emphasise the use of the lockable under seat storage available on most rental cycles instead of using the rental cycle's basket for bags containing personal items or valuables.

"In addition, we encourage visitors to be aware of their surroundings when travelling about the Island and to travel in well lit areas at night if at all possible."
