Police scotch rumour that dirty trick is behind suspicious package
Police do not believe an organiser of anti-Ewart Brown demonstrations was the target of a suspicious package delivered to the Freisenbruch-Meyer Building on Tuesday.
Yesterday rumours spread that the package, which contained a white powdery substance, may have been sent to intimidate rally organiser Janice Battersbee, who is a company employee.
The package was addressed to Freisenbruch-Meyer and said by Police to contain "some form of narcotic".
Bloggers speculated the package was sent because Mrs. Battersbee had encouraged hundreds to protest against the Premier's unilateral decision to accept four former Guantánamo Bay detainees here.
However Police press officer Dwayne Caines said they did not believe Mrs. Battersbee was the target and the she is not "a person of interest" in their investigation.
Mrs. Battersbee, who is preparing for a third demonstration against the Premier tomorrow, urged her supporters to "remain calm and focused on the matter at hand".
"I will say that anyone who knows me knows that my lifestyle has no place for drugs," she stated.
"As far as intimidation goes there is a change occurring in our Island that some may not wish to happen but we must not give up on what we have begun."
She added that the protest will move forward as planned, at 12.30 p.m.
Her employers Freisenbruch-Meyer released a press statement yesterday explaining the package was received by courier.
General Manager William Madeiros said the staff were evacuated until the "all clear" was given.
He apologised for the inconvenience to clients and thanked members of the public for the concern they have expressed over the past two days.
