Premier's popularity edges up

Just under a third of people have given the thumbs up to Premier Ewart Brown's tenure as leader of Bermuda.

Views on the Premier's four-year term were split down the middle in the poll by Mindmaps, with 31 percent saying he's done a good job, 42 percent saying he's been poor and 24 percent somewhere in between.

He gets most of his backing among the black community, with 51 percent of blacks saying they are happy with his efforts, compared with just three percent of whites.

Twenty percent of blacks were unhappy with his reign, compared with 75 percent of whites.

Women thought more highly of Dr. Brown's tenure than men, with 34 percent of females in support compared to 26 percent of males. Fifty percent of men rated him poor or very poor, compared with 36 percent of women.

And with just three weeks to go before he steps down, Dr. Brown's popularity rating has climbed from 23 percent to 27 percent, taking him back to his level around the time of the Uighurs controversy. Fifty-four percent still rate him unfavourably, compared with 58 percent in the previous poll in July.

Deputy Premier Paula Cox's favourability remains unchanged at 54 percent, still a long way short of the low 70s ratings she regularly scored before her "cog in the wheel" remark, but significantly higher than any of the other leaders and deputies on the Island.

Ms Cox is particularly popular among blacks, with 81 percent saying they like her compared with 16 percent of whites. Sixty percent of women rate her favourably, compared with 47 percent of men.

United Bermuda Party leader Kim Swan's score goes up from 28 percent to 32 percent, while his deputy Trevor Moniz remains fixed on 30 percent.

Mr. Swan does well among the older generation, finding favour with 44 percent of over-65s.

Bermuda Democratic Alliance leader Craig Cannonier improves from 22 percent to 24 percent, with his deputy Kathy Michelmore going from 12 percent to 14 percent.

Contrary to the trend for the BDA as a whole, Mr. Cannonier is more popular among blacks than whites, with 32 percent of blacks in favour of him compared with 22 percent of whites.

More people said they don't know their opinion on Dr. Michelmore than anyone else, with 54 percent unable to give her a rating.
