Public react on Facebook to weekend of violence
The Royal Gazette's Facebook fans reacted to the Easter Holiday's violence by posting their opinions on this newspaper's page. Here are some of the comments.
Shane White said: "When will someone take responsibility for the outright disaster that the Government has lead us into by not building a police force that can keep us safe. I am sick and tired of other people saying the PLP are doing what they can, that they are the party by the people for the people.
"The people are dying and nothing is being done. What will you say when a child is hit in the crossfire or a Police officer is shot and killed? We cannot let this go on any further, we either need to get our Government to for once do something, or have a more competent one elected. Bermuda cannot survive anymore violence. Our ancestors would be rolling in their graves to think that we let this happen on a holy weekend."
Michael Gruver said: "The people must take their destiny into their own hands. You must never allow your safety to be decided by another person. It is every individual's responsibility to protect themselves and others around them. You don't wait on the police or government to do what you the citizens need to do."
Raenette Butterfield said: "Bermuda Police need to be trained to carry guns. The mobile command centres need to have officers in them 24 hours a day. There needs to be random searches for the known gang members.
"The Commissioner, Governor, Premier and the political parties all need to come together so that they can try to reduce the amount of violence that's occurring in this once safe island."
Chris Gibbons said: "I think this issue is two-sided. The PLP and Government House needs to improve in many areas, but the other side of the problem is in the homes of these "gang members". Parents need to be held accountable for the things their children are doing. "
