Rower plans to do the full End-to-End
Tomorrow is the official Catlin End-to-End event, but one enthusiast is planning on unofficially adding his own category.
Some people will be swimming, cycling or hiking their way from End-to-End or Middle-to-End. But Will Thomas-Ferrand said he is planning to row from St. George's to Dockyard in a coastal row boat something no one has done yet.
He said: "I'm not doing it as part of the End-to-End as it has not been planned for by the official organisers and I am sure they will need to get official approval, but it is more for a personal challenge."
Although rowing is a category in the official End-to-End, the rowers start from White's Island in Hamilton Harbour to Dockyard.
However, Mr. Thomas-Ferrand will be doing the length of the Island by way of a boat that is designed to handle Bermuda's rough water.
"I will be using a proper coastal rowing boat. They are able to cope with waves much better than a river rowing boat which is designed for flat water."
The boat is about 15ft long and is a one-manned vessel. Mr. Thomas-Ferrand estimates the journey will take him approximately two hours depending on the weather and the sea conditions.
"I will make sure that I have plenty of water and I will have a support boat following me."
A spokesperson for the End-to-End event said: "There have been approximately 1,500 people signed up but we anticipate double that by Saturday.
"There are 25 swimmers who will be swimming from Watford Bridge. There will also be a group of cyclists who will be cycling as superheroes."
This year's End-to-End will host a water stop competition.
"There are 14 water stops along the route and participants can vote for their favourite and most creative water stop," said the spokesperson.
"There is going to be some pretty extraordinary things along the way, such as commemorating 400 years and musical entertainment."
Entertainment scheduled to perform in Dockyard is Mohawk Radio, Chewstick and Salsamania. Walkers from St. George's will begin at 8 a.m. and walkers from Hamilton will start at 10 a.m.
The spokesperson added: "The majority of the walkers arrive in Dockyard usually between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Catlin, the Bank of Bermuda Foundation and M3 Wireless are the main sponsors of the event.
