Schoolchildren pay loving homage to their mothers

Thank you mommy: Victor Scott student Zaria Lekki gets a kiss from her mother Latisha after reading out her Mother's day essay yesterday morning during a special assembly with a visit from Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva. Eight students read out their Mother's day essays to their respective mothers.

The Victor Scott school community came together in celebration yesterday in honour of their parents.

To mark tomorrow's Mother's Day, the school presented bouquets of flowers to mothers named 'The best mom in the world' by their children.

Students from each class submitted entries into a writing competition, with the teachers choosing the winning entries.

Those who most touched their teachers' hearts were yesterday invited to read out their tributes to the school assembly, accompanied by their mothers.

Announcing the winners, school principal Valerie Williams said: "Many of these stories touched us from the bottom of our hearts.

"We are celebrating these mothers, but we are also celebrating all mothers because through them, these children are examples of Victor Scott."

Among the tributes penned were comments such as, "She is the nicest mom in the world and my mom looks better than my nanny," from P2 student Majestic Butterfield.

P4 student Tonshayah Gift said: "When I'm sad my mom cheers me up by saying everything is going to be OK.

"She tells me I'm black and beautiful, strong and unique."

P5 student Javontae Duhart said: "When we lived in the US life was rough and we only had very little food to live, but if there was any food left she would give it to us.

"My mother is very hard-working and makes sure we have food and a roof over our heads.

"Thank you for all you have done for me. If I didn't have her I would be nothing, I wouldn't be anything without the best mom in the world."

P5 classmate Kandi Herbert said: "My mom loves me so much, she tries not to embarrass me in front of my friends.

"My mom just wants me to keep in education, so I understand why she's not taking me on a cruise in school time."

P6 student Keitaro Darrell said: "I love my mom a lot because she is always there for me and never lets me down."

P6 classmate Connor Tunbridge said: "My mother is my best friend and I tell her lots of stuff, so that is why my mother should be mother of the year."

Other winners were P1 student Zaria Lekki, P2 student Charis Smith, P3 student Malaikah Abdul-Jabbar and P4 student Zorico Gilbert.

Florist 'Just Roses' donated the bouquets presented to the mothers of each winning student.

In addition, single red roses were given to the teachers of the school.
