Sex and the City premiere raises $13,000 for Myanmar relief

The hysteria from the 'Sex and the City' movie has finally quietened down, but a charity has benefitted loud and clear.

The Bermuda Red Cross managed to raise $13,602 through a fundraiser held on June 1, with all proceeds going toward relief for the Myanmar (also known as Burma) cyclone.

Red Cross director Ann Spencer-Arscott said: "It was great. It was so excellent to see people wanting to rally around to do something to benefit the less fortunate."

This was the first fundraiser of this kind for the charity and Mrs. Spencer-Arscott admitted: "It's more work than you realise, but in the end it's worth it."

The fundraiser featured two showings of the popular chick-flick, and while ladies at the early afternoon screening received samples of Sarah Jessica Parker's scent, those at the second showing were given Ferrero Rocher chocolates.

"We were very fortunate to have received a lot of donations to hand out as door prizes," said Mrs. Spencer-Arscott.

Before the movie, attendees were entertained by keyboardist Ben Lusher, and several lucky ladies even got to take home gifts from places like Island Shop, Digicel, Atlantic Jewellery and Discovery Wines.

So far, the charity has raised $23,000 towards Myanmar relief, however, donations for the China Earthquake "have been slower in coming through. We only have $1,300 in donations for this appeal," said Mrs. Spencer-Arscott.

She stresses that both appeals are still open and can be deposited in the following accounts: Bank of Bermuda 010-187417-011 or Butterfield Bank 20-006-060-663859-200.
