Showtime Bermuda Soul Review will hit Harlem's Apollo this week
In six days, a group of Bermudians will proudly take to the stage at the famed Apollo Theatre in New York for the biggest night in their short careers.
It will be the culmination of the Success Series 2008 and will showcase Bermudian talent in the 'The Showtime Bermuda Soul Review'.
Producer Kevin Bean, of KDB Entertainment, said: "We are now at the end of the 2008 Success Series, which highlighted all local performers who are about to show their talents on the international scene as they perform at the world famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem, New York.
"Gracing the stage at the Apollo on November 9, will be all the finalists from Singing for Success, backed by Bermuda's own Wall Street Band and the Calibre Horns, along with the winner of Acting for Success Khalilah Smith. "Adopted Bermudian George Huff and the Jacksonville Mass Choir will also be appearing. These performers will all be a part of what is now known as the Showtime Bermuda Soul Review."
The aim of the Success Series is to hone the skills of gifted individuals and also provide them with an education. The first two competitions, both called Singing for Success, saw scholarships to Berklee College of Music and the LA Music School presented to each winner. As well as Singing for Success there was also Acting for Success competition, with Khalilah Smith winning the chance to perform at the Apollo Theatre and a full scholarship to the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre.
Sunday's event is a first-ever for Bermudian entertainers and Mr. Bean added: "What makes this event historic is that it will be the first time that the Apollo will host an event produced entirely by Bermudians and featuring Bermudians, even if they are adopted like my friend George.
"The Showtime Bermuda Soul Review is already attracting the interest of the US Media and will be featured on the CBS Morning Show on Friday."
Mr. Bean also called on Bermudians and friends of Bermuda to attend the Sunday night event. "Now what would top this all off, is if Bermudians were able to come to the Apollo to see first hand and share in what will be nothing short of a magnificent night of entertainment.
"So with that in mind through the kind assistance of our corporate partners we've been able to make it possible for anyone who is resident in Bermuda and who wants to be part of this celebration of our local talent to stay at the Crown Plaza La Guardia Hotel for $162 per night."
Mr. Bean then thanked all of his sponsors, who through their kind assistance have helped to make his dream of educating Bermudians in the arts a reality.
"Now as I've already hinted, none of this would have been possible without the involvement of our corporate partners," he said.
