Singing legend Odetta arriving for show

Gospel fans should mark this Sunday in their calendars – that's when living legend Odetta is set to perform in the Mid-Ocean Amphitheatre at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel as part of the Bermuda International Film Festival's Reel World Weekend.

The singer performed at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco last week and it was once said of her that "if only one could be sure that every 50 years a voice and a soul like Odetta's would come along, the centuries would pass so quickly and painlessly we would hardly recognise time".

And anyone doubting whether at the age of 76, Odetta is still up to the job, needs only to refer to the San Francisco Chronicle's review of this performance.

In that review, Leah Garchik said: "As the sun began to set in the west, she rolled the notes of 'The House of the Rising Sun' across the meadow as if she were tolling them on some huge bell. There was a whole melody in even the single word 'home'."

Opening for Odetta at the Fairmont Southampton on Sunday, October 12, at 3 p.m., is the Hamilton Seventh-day Adventist Mass Choir.

Tickets, which are $65 in advance, $75 at the door and $50 for children under 12, are available online at www.bdatix.bm or in person at Transact, Internet Lane, on Reid Street, Hamilton and Picture Perfect, in Heron Bay Plaza, Southampton.

Two other events making up Reel World Weekend, a fundraiser in aid of the BIFF's educational programmes, are Colours of Tango, taking place at 8 p.m. today at the Fairmont Southampton and an Online Silent Auction on-going at the website www.biff.cmarket.com
