Slain girl's friend pens poem
A childhood friend of Rhiana Moore has written a poem in tribute to her school friend.
Yeakara Greaves attended West Pembroke School with Rhiana four years ago but is now living in Jamaica. Trying to come to terms with the death of her friend, the 14-year-old has now written a poem entitled 'For Rhiana Moore... R.I.P.'
Rhiana's body was discovered on the morning of Saturday, May 31, in the mangroves of Blue Hole Hill Park nature reserve. She was buried on Monday at St. John's Cemetery, Pembroke.
A 32-year-old man, Ze Menefeskiduse Selassie, of St. George's, has been charged with pre-meditated murder.
Yeakara said yesterday: "It is so sad for me because I will celebrate my 15th birthday soon and I am having so much fun but my friend died so tragically. We used to do lunch together everyday. It is just not fair she is gone.
"I keeping asking my Mommy why, but she has no answers for me. How could this happen in Bermuda? I live in Kingston, Jamaica, and I am scared everyday but I was never afraid as a little girl living in Bermuda.
"I am sure that Rhiana was not afraid either. I cannot cry anymore but I wrote this poem for my friend Rhiana. I hope you will share it with her family and friends as I do not know how to get in touch with them."
Yeakara's family lived in Bermuda from 2000 to 2004, during which time her mother Caroline was employed at the Rosedon Hotel.
Ms Greaves, an assistant store manager, said yesterday: "Yeakara is heartbroken. We wish to send our condolences to Rhiana's family."
For Rhiana Moore — R.I.P
My old friend — but still way too young to depart
I thought of you today — the time we spent together as friends
I remember that summer when 50 Cent was the jam.
Our laughter, our arguments, our play
We were ten years old then, you, me and our crew at West Pembroke School.
Today I heard that you were gone — how sad, my tears could not express my pain
Your life was taken far too soon, but Rhiana, your memory they can never remove
For I am so glad for the time I spent with you.
As I wipe my tears, I look at the pictures of you; I bow my head and pray,
For I can only imagine your family's pain
Goodbye my old friend — Sleep well.
On my heart your smile and your essence is forever engraved.
Rest in Peace Rhiana Moore, I love you.
A Tribute to a Beautiful Bermudian Girl — Rhiana Moore.
Forever friends,
