Special concert tomorrow morning to highlight cancer fight
PALS hopes persons affected by cancer will join in a celebration of life at Astwood Park tomorrow morning.
The charity will host 'Survivor Sunrise Sunday', featuring a performance by singer, drummer and cancer survivor Fred Johnson.
Jan Fraser Coles, who has been working with PALS on several events, said she is looking forward to the experience.
"It's going to be a musical experience, with Fred singing and playing drums," she said. "For survivors, we wanted to have a celebration of life. We wanted a sunrise, not a sunset.
"It's open to everyone, especially those who have ben touched by cancer. There probably isn't a family alive that hasn't been touched by cancer in some way."
Mrs. Fraser Coles also praised Mr. Johnson, who she called "a gift to the community".
"Without getting teary eyed, Fred has a way about bringing music into your soul," she said. "He's a very calm, spirited man. A big hearted man."
"I am thrilled that he would come to Bermuda. He cancelled all of his gigs to come here. He said there's something special about Bermuda."
In the past 16 years, Mr. Johnson has shared the stage with Dizzy Gillespie, B.B. King, Patti LaBelle and Deepak Chopra.
He is the president of the Voh'armic Healing Institute in Israel and serves as the lead minister for the One World Fellowship International Church in the US.
"We welcome attending folks to bring blankets or something to sit on and enjoy the amazing sound of Fred Johnson," said Mrs. Fraser Cole. "Fred will inspire all attending to greet the new day with joy."
The event begins at 7 a.m.
