Spirit takes second place, Russia Tall Ship breaks mast

Retired from race: Russia's Kruzenshtern, seen here departing Bermuda on Monday, has unfortunately had to retire from the latest stage of the latest stage of the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge after her top mast broke at sea. She is now sailing to the US for repairs.

Only hours after leaving Bermuda, Russia's Tall Ship Kruzenshtern has retired from the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge after suffering a broken top mast overnight. She is now heading for a US port for repairs.

Strong winds overnight also caused a few problems for other ships with current leader on the water, Fazisi (USA) having broken a back stay in the night. Behind her on the water is Peter von Danzig (Germany) and Spirit of Bermuda who are neck and neck.

On corrected time, Tecla (Netherlands) is in the lead with Spirit of Bermuda in second

Reacting to the news of the Kruzenshtern's retirement from the race, Pride of Baltimore skipper Jan Miles said: "That is a big surprise! She is an all metal boat…from stem to stern, from keel to truck. The wind was not especially strong last night either. But there was some lightning about. According to overheard radio conversations she is headed directly to port to organise lowering a topmast to her deck. Hmmm. I am quite curious to what has gone wrong."
