Stay vigilant in swine flu fight – Health Department

Swine flu has yet to reach Bermuda, according to health bosses.However residents are asked to continue practising safety measures likely to keep influenza A (H1N1) at bay.A Government spokesperson suggested persons observe the following basic measures:

However residents are asked to continue practising safety measures likely to keep influenza A (H1N1) at bay.

A Government spokesperson suggested persons observe the following basic measures:

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it

• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

• Avoid contact with sick persons

• Clean hard surfaces frequently

Austria, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, France, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Germany, Ireland, Israel, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom have all reported "laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths" while deaths have been confirmed in Mexico and the US.

Said the spokesperson: "To date, there have been no cases in Bermuda. [The World Health Organisation] WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders.

For persons who are travelling, it is advised whenever possible, that they avoid crowded enclosed spaces and close contact with people with flu-like symptoms."
