STUDY FINDINGS

Seventy-eight percent of Bermuda's seniors have been diagnosed with a medical condition, but only 44 percent were satisfied or very satisfied with healthcare services.

These among many other statistics on Seniors were released in the Seniors Ageing Trends and Services report (STATS) by Age Concern, the Ministry of Social Rehabilitation and the National Office for Seniors and the Physically Challenged.

It was compiled after surveying 508 households and included 695 eligible seniors. Included below are some of the most significant numbers from the report, found online at www.gov.bm:

— 35 percent of seniors have an annual income under $25,000

— 25 percent have incomes between $25,000 and $50,000

— 21 percent have incomes that exceed $50,000

— 21 percent of the seniors have an annual income of over $50,000

— 59 percent of the seniors report a net income of $2,284 per month after expenses

— 18 percent of seniors report a net income of $184 per month after expenses

— The median income of seniors was estimated at $37,500, and the monthly average was $3,125

— 54 percent of the seniors own their home outright

— 18 percent have a monthly mortgage and the average monthly payment was $2,100

— 19 percent rented their home for a median payment of $1,000 and five percent lived rent-free

— 47 percent of all seniors were worried about their home being broken into, 23 percent were worried about crime-related theft and 18 percent were worried about slipping in the bathtub

— 94 percent have health insurance coverage and three percent were refused health insurance coverage once they turned 60

— 61 percent had major medical coverage while 68 percent have coverage for prescription drugs, 49 percent have overseas major medical coverage and 48 percent have semi-private ward coverage

—24 percent have Government's HIP insurance, 23 percent BF&M and 21 percent were insured by Argus

— 78 percent felt Government should play some role in paying for health insurance

— 13 percent of seniors visited the KEMH medical clinic, eight percent went to the Physiotherapy Unit and eight percent went to the Immunisation Clinic

— 44 percent were either satisfied or very satisfied with health care services, 21 percent were indifferent and 16 percent were dissatisfied

— 90 percent said they had access to all the services while 73 percent said they could afford all the services they need

— 78 percent of those surveyed were over 65

— 42 percent were male and 58 percent were female

— 65 percent of the seniors were black and 32 percent were white

— 56 percent were married while 22 percent were widowed and 13 percent were divorced with nine percent never having married

— 60 percent were retired, 22 percent working full-time, eight percent part-time and seven percent were looking for work, volunteering or unable to work.
