Talks on reverse May 24 parade

The Bermuda Day Parade could be in for another change this year, with participants marching in the opposite direction.

Although the Ministry of Cultural Affairs has refused to comment on the issue, The Royal Gazette understands discussions are ongoing regarding the possibility of starting the parade at Bernard Park and ending it at Bull's Head Car Park, with concession stands being run on Front Street.

Last year's parade began with the participants marching down Front Street before turning onto Court Street. The parade travelled left onto Victoria street, right onto Cedar Avenue, through the tennis stadium, before turning onto Dutton Avenue. The closing celebrations were held at Bernard Park.

Veteran parade participant Terry Flood, who is a lifetime member of Warwick United Majorettes and Drum Corps, said many groups were not pleased with the news.

He said: "Government has sent out a memo with the suggestion," Mr. Flood said. "I've been participating in the parade for years, I started in 1960, and I am a consultant for many drum corps and people are upset about the suggestion.

"They have suggested that keeping it in Hamilton will mean more parking and there will be stalls at Number 1 shed. But the route works as it is.

"It's part of our culture, many of the Gombey and drum groups like ending in the park because we can feed the kids and set up camp. They have changed it so many times now, one year it ended at the stadium. They should just leave it be as everyone enjoys it.

"It's definitely a case of 'why fix it when it's not broken'."

The Ministry has been asked several times to comment on the situation but has refused to do so, although a source said it is considering making changes to the route.
