Taxi driver found guilty of harassing female passenger
A taxi driver harassed a female passenger for sex, taking her the wrong way home and stopping off in a dark driveway.
Once he finally reached her house he handed her a condom and said he would waive the fare if she had sex with him.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo yesterday found Jarreau Valentine Brown Rogers guilty of invading the privacy of a woman by accosting, and uttering words in a manner to cause alarm.
Rogers, 25, of Sandys, denied the offence and defended himself at his trial two weeks ago at Magistrates' Court.
Mr. Tokunbo yesterday gave his judgment in the case a guilty verdict.
At the trial, the court heard Rogers picked up the woman and a friend at the 24-hour gas station in Hamilton at 3.30 a.m. on January 25.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said she asked the driver to drop her friend off first in Paget. She sat in the rear of the vehicle behind the passenger seat.
She gave the man her address and he then drove towards Hamilton Parish.
Once in Flatts however, instead of taking the North Shore Road he turned into Harrington Sound Road.
The woman said he told her, "When you get to your house you could take me upstairs".
Rogers then pulled into a "dark driveway" at Devil's Hole, which prompted the woman to give him her address again.
He then headed around Harrington Sound past the Holy Trinity Church. But instead of taking her home he then drove to Fractious Street.
The woman told the court: "He pulled over again and I told him, 'This is not where I stay. Take me home'. He kept saying, 'When we get to your house I will take you upstairs. My girlfriend won't mind'."
When they reached her driveway the bill was $40 but she only had a $50 note. Rogers tried to give her a condom, saying: "I'll give you back the $50 and you can take me upstairs."
The woman got out of the taxi but he followed her, taking hold of her right arm. He eventually drove off.
At the trial he denied driving to Devil's Hole or Fractious Street, and denied making sexual advances. Rogers did admit grabbing the woman's arm.
Rogers will be sentenced on June 16.
