Taxi operators and Government to meet and discuss the intended suspension of Radio Cabs
Government is to meet with taxi operators to discuss the impending suspension of the Bermuda Taxi Radio Cabs licence.
Marc Bean, Junior Minister of Tourism and Transport, has called on taxi owners to attend a meeting on Tuesday.
The meeting, at the Bermuda Industrial Union, will provide an update on the suspension by the Public Service Vehicle Licensing Board.
Mr. Bean said: "It is critically important for these taxi owners to attend this meeting so that they can fully understand their options and what steps they must take to become compliant as well as the associated timelines."
A notice was placed on the Official Gazette on May 7 informing the public of the suspension of Radio Cabs' permit to operate a taxi dispatching service.
This was due to the company failing to comply with the amendments to the Motor Car Act 1951, the Motor Taxi Regulations 1952 and the Motor Taxi (Taxi Dispatching Service) Regulations 1987.
Under the legislation Radio Cabs must operate a GPS dispatching system, with each vehicle equipped with GPS.
Senator Bean however, said: "They are not operating approved GPS equipment and so had their licence suspended."
He said the move would affect up to 160 taxi owners.
Bermuda Taxi Radio Cabs was allowed to operate under the current permit until May 31, but after this date the permit is to be suspended without further notice.
The company has been told to warn taxi owners to sign up with a different dispatching company.
Owners are asked to attend the meeting at the BIU at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
