TCD is told to stop failing taxis without working GPS

Transport Control Department was yesterday instructed to stop failing taxis that are not compliant with GPS regulations.

Earlier this week more than 300 taxi drivers attended a meeting at Warwick Workmen's Club to discuss TCD's refusal to licence cabs without working GPS.

Since December 1, it is estimated up to 200 cabs have been failed by the Transport Control Department because their Global Positioning Systems have not been connected under test.

It was reported in Tuesday's Gazette that lawyers from Trott & Duncan are thought to be examining whether it is legal for TCD to fail cabs from December 1 when other taxis were passed in previous months. Radio Cabs intended to pursue the matter against Government in court.

Junior Minister of Tourism and Transport Sen. Marc Bean, who has been assigned the task of resolving conflicts in the taxi industry, said: "In the interest of resolving this issue as soon as possible, I have, with the Minister's consent, decided to take a different approach. In addition, I am not confident that we are on firm legal ground with regard to the Motor Car Act.

"Our focus should be on the dispatching company issues as opposed to the individual operators."

Spokesperson for Radio Cabs, Eddie Darrell, yesterday said: "I agree with what Sen. Bean is saying, but they did not come up with this decision of their own accord. We were going to serve them papers tomorrow.

He added: "I don't want to dwell on the negative, I'm just glad we are all on board now."

Saturday is the deadline for all taxis to be licensed and TCD officials are urging all drivers to bring their cars in for inspection to avoid any delays in the licensing process.
