Ten day sentence for threatening wife
A man who admitted assaulting and threatening his wife has been sentenced to spend ten days in prison.
Michael Demoura, 45, of Dudley Hill, in Paget, pleaded guilty to the offences which happened at the couple's home last Tuesday.
Magistrates' Court heard that Demoura arrived home from work and appeared to be upset.
He denied that anything was wrong when asked by his wife, then went to the bedroom to change his clothes.
An argument later ensued between the couple when she tried to throw him out of their home at which point Demoura grabbed his wife's neck and held a machete up to her, saying: "I will chop you up".
The woman ran into a room for safety and called Police. Demoura was subsequently arrested and charged.
In court yesterday, Demoura said: "It was just a heated argument." He then refused to comment any further.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner was unsure how to deal with the domestic violence dispute, considering the wife did not file a restraining order against her attacker.
But Crown prosecutor Takiyah Burgess told the court that this wasn't the first time he had assaulted his wife as in 2003 he was convicted of causing her grievous bodily harm.
The Magistrate took all the information into account and determined a custodial sentence would be appropriate.
