Terrence Smith trial delayed

Terrence Smith's lawyers have now reviewed the infamous Bermuda Housing Corporation (BHC) Police dossier – but his trial is likely to be delayed until next year.

At the last Supreme Court hearing in the case of Smith, 48, his lawyer Llewellyn Peniston revealed that he and top QC Sir Richard Cheltenham wanted disclosure of the Police files.

Smith is accused of defrauding the BHC.

Yesterday, Mr. Peniston and prosecutor Robert Welling indicated that the material had been shared, but that they still have much work to do to prepare their cases.

The judge therefore vacated the November 3 date earmarked for the start of Smith's trial, which is estimated to last four to six weeks.

He bailed him to come back to court for the arraignments session when a new trial date will be discussed, noting: "It's unlikely that it will be heard this year."
