The unanswered questions...
We put a series of questions to Government yesterday about the Uighurs and the loss of their jobs at the Port Royal Golf Course, which remain unanswered. Here is what we asked:
• Does Premier Ewart Brown feel responsible for finding the men new jobs?
• Is he obliged to as part of the agreement he struck with the US last year?
• Did Dr. Brown devise a long-term plan for the men's future on the Island when he made his decision to give them refuge here?
• Can he comment, as Tourism Minister, on the "budget constraints" at Port Royal that have led to the men's jobs there being terminated?
• Are the Uighurs free to seek other employment on the island?
l Will the Government assist with this?
• If so, have any jobs in the public sector been found for them?
• Have any steps been taken to find alternative employment for them in the private sector?
• How will Government's Work Permit Holders' Competency with the English Language policy, which came into effect on April 1, affect the Uighurs?
• Will they have to sit the Department of Immigration's English language test or are they exempt from the policy?
• Have the Uighurs been afforded any special status, giving them different employment rights to other foreigners?
• If so, what status is this and how long will it be in place?
l Has the US any say in what jobs the men are given?
• If the men can't find work, are they eligible for any financial assistance from Government and will they be allowed to stay on the Island?
• Does the Labour and Immigration Minister feel responsible for ensuring the men do find work, due to the part he played in bringing them to Bermuda?
