An 18-year-old yesterday admitted robbing and attacking a taxi driver with a metal bike part.

Edward DeSilva Ottley, of Cherry Hill, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to the robbery and the use of an offensive weapon on Paul Trew.

The November 14 attack sent the 33-year-old driver to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was treated for wounds to his head and ear.

The wounds required nine staples to close.

Ottley's co-accused Akeem Harrell, 18, and Jahrico Tucker, 17 pleaded not guilty to the robbery. They were accused of using force to steal a cellular phone and keys.

Harrell, of Warwick, and Tucker, of Smith's, were represented by Elizabeth Christopher and Larry Mussenden respectively.

They also denied a charge of possessing an offensive weapon, namely a 12-inch metal bike part.

The court heard the attack happened shortly after midnight when Mr Trew was called to pick up two passengers from Upper Crust restaurant in Sandys.

The taxi driver saw two men at the location, who then asked him to pick up two more passengers from Watford Bridge en route to Woody's Bar.

Crown counsel Larissa Burgess said Mr Trew was asked to drop them to the back parking lot at the west end bar.

They exited the vehicle and one appeared to be pulling out a wallet to pay, but was stalling — moments later Mr. Trew was attacked and some of his personal items stolen.

Ms Burgess said the maximum penalty for the offence was five years' imprisonment.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered all three defendants to appear in court for mention on November 30 and remanded them in custody until then.

In court: Akeem Harrell, 18, (left) has pleaded not guilty to the robbery and possession of an offensive weapon. He is seen here being escorted to court.
