Toys for Tots collects 979 presents for charity

The annual Toys for Tots campaign sponsored by Coldwell Banker Bermuda Realty made dreams come true when they received more than 900 toys for needy children. The toys, donated by individuals, organisations and schools have now been delivered to the Coalition for the Protection of Children where they will be wrapped and given away at a Christmas party.

A scheme helping children in need collected almost 1,000 toys as it seeks to meet demand from the community.

The Toys for Tots programme, sponsored by Coldwell Banker Bermuda Realty, was given donations from organisations and schools across Bermuda.

One of the donors, nine-year-old Jalin Currin used his birthday party as a fund-raiser, donating all of his birthday money to the charity.

Stephanie Robinson, one of the organisers of the programme, said: "This is just one example of the great effort we have seen in the community."

As of Friday, the programme had been given 979 presents, with more donations still expected and Ms Robinson added: "We think we're going to be close to or the same as last year."

Last year, the charity set out to find toys for 450 children, but managed to collect 1,200 toys. This year, the charity is looking to find gifts for 600 children.

"We have 150 more families on our register this year," said Ms Robinson. "These are working families, people who are working every day but cannot make ends meet."

Kim Webb, another organiser, said that the increase in demand was caused in a large part by the economic climate.

"Due to the downturn, the number of children identified as in need has grown significantly since 2008," she said. "We have already delivered hundreds of toys to Mount Hill for wrapping and preparation."

The annual "Toys for Tots" campaign sponsored by Coldwell Banker Bermuda Realty has recorded another great success on behalf of The Coalition for the Protection of Children. Organisers Kim Webb and Stephanie Robinson estimate more than 900 have been donated by generous individuals; organisations; and schools to help meet the goal set via registration with the Coalition earlier this year. Due to the downturn in the economy, î said Ms. Webb the number of children identified as in need has grown significantly since 2008. We have already delivered hundreds of toys to Mount Hill for wrapping and preparation for the Christmas party. The entire team at Coldwell Banker Bermuda Realty has been overwhelmed by the generosity of those fortunate enough to be able to give back. Nine year old, Jalin Currin (middle with school tie) used the opportunity presented by his recent birthday to share his blessings by raising money for Toys for Tots! Last weekend he used his own birthday money to purchase toys for children! This is just one example of the great effort we have seen in the community added Ms. Robinson "Assistance from the retail sector has also been outstanding. Toys for Tots is an annual campaign that has run in support of the Coalition for the Protection of Children since 2002. If you would like to become a part of its success, please drop off your NEW toy to Coldwell Banker Bermuda Realty by Saturday, 5th December 2009 in order to allow volunteers to wrap and tag the presents in time for Christmas.
