Traffic delays after road accident at Somerset Bridge

The scene of a crash at Somerset Bridge yesterday evening, which caused extensive traffic hold-ups.

A three-vehicle collision caused traffic delays at the Somerset Bridge for a number of hours yesterday evening.

Police attended the accident at 4.40 p.m., which involved a car, a motorcycle and an auxiliary cycle.

According to a Police report, the motorcycle and the auxiliary cycle were travelling east on Somerset Road and the car was travelling west when the driver of the car, a 40-year-old Paget woman, lost control at the junction of Somerset Road and Wharf Drive.

She hit the auxiliary cycle, a wall and the motorcycle.

The rider of the auxiliary cycle, a 64-year-old Sandys parish woman, sustained injures to both legs as well as her head and was taken to hospital.

She is believed to work in the laundry at Pompano Beach Club.

The Paget woman was not injured nor was the rider of the mortorcycle, a 40-year-old Warwick man.

However, the car received front end damage while the motorcycle received rear end damage and the damage to the auxiliary cycle was unclear.

The accident caused traffic to back up as far as Five Star Island in Southampton and both lanes of Somerset Road at Somerset Bridge were blocked initially.

One lane was opened under the direction of Police officers at the scene to allow some traffic through.

Regular traffic flow resumed three hours after the collision occurred.

Boat channel closed

The Department of Marine and Ports Services is advising all boaters that the Somerset Bridge Boat Channel will be closed to all boating traffic for maintenance dredging between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm tomorrow and Thursday.
