Trust mulls moving Island Construction from Devonshire Marsh

The Devonshire Marsh

The National Trust is mulling over whether to move Island Construction – owned by Government MP Zane DeSilva – from its base near Devonshire Marsh.

The firm has been there on Middle Road since the mid-1950s on a month-to-month lease but the National Trust is keen to extend the nature area around the marsh.

It's thought the firm might be moved to another Devonshire location not too far away however environmentalist David Wingate said he could not comment too much on the idea as it had yet to go to the National Trust Council.

He said: "There is still some research to be done before the Council makes a decision – it is not a decision we take lightly. Every aspect has to be considered."

Mr. Wingate said the National Trust and the Audubon Society had worked very hard on acquiring as much of the Devonshire Marsh basin as possible in the area zoned for nature.

Asked whether it was worth taking back industrial land for nature Mr. Wingate said: "Clearly there's complications to the Island Construction land.

"The lease from the Trust does have a clause whereby they are required to reinstate the land to open space – they would reinstate it as close as possible to what it was. Having been industrial for a long time, obviously that would be much more difficult."

Mr. DeSilva said he would have to move if asked.

Asked where the firm might go he said: "We are looking at several scenarios at the moment – it is early days."
