UBP meets with UK-based students

The United Bermuda Party (UBP) met with UK-based students in London to discuss their hopes and concerns for the Island.

UBP party leader Kim Swan, chairman Jeff Sousa and MP Cole Simons discussed a wide range of issues with almost 30 young people. Students expressed concerns for quality of the public education system and the high incidence of crime on the Island. They also addressed a need for stronger emphasis on the arts as one way to bring Bermudians together, according to the UBP.

The event, which was held at the Institute of Directors, at Pall Mall, in London, was aimed at building relationships to strengthen the Island.

Mr. Swan said: "Ultimately, our goal is to bring all Bermudians together, black and white, rich and poor, into one citizenry, where we look each other in the eye with respect, where we share a sense of positive direction toward a better Bermuda. In our view, we don't have that right now, and haven't for quite some time."

He continued: "The challenges are serious and the world will not wait for us, it will not accept excuses. It will simply measure us by how we perform. It is the same for every country, large and small.

"So our message this morning is that your country will need you not today, not tomorrow, but someday when you are ready."

The Progressive Labour Party will host the Premier's Annual Student Dinner on November 14 in London. Students in the United Kingdom can register for the event at www.londonoffice.gov.bm.
