Up With People to perform at lunchtime at City Hall

Despite a rain delay, Up With People are taking their performance to the steps of City Hall today as a prelude to their full show tomorrow at Dockyard.

The group was originally scheduled to perform at Harbour Nights on Wednesday, but heavy rain forced the event's postponement, and a rescheduling for the multi-cultural performance.

Phil Worcester, Marketing and Operations Manager for Up With People, said that the organisation has spent the last several days working with several of the Islands charities and getting to know the Islands culture.

"Since we've been here, we've been working with Habitat for Humanity, WindReach and the Sunshine League," said Mr. Worcester. "We work with everyone from the elderly, to children. You name it, we do it. We're trying to get involved with as many organisations as we can.

The group visiting the Island, made up of a cast of around 50 young adults from 15 different countries, divide their time between charity work and performance.

"We've been operating since 1965, and completely non-profit," said Mr. Worcester. "We take in youth for a six month program, visiting different communities and staying with various host families.

"We're best known for our performances with songs and dance from several different cultures. It's all about meeting new people and travelling the world. There's something different for everyone."

Mr. Worcester became involved with the organisation two years ago, and after his six- month period as a student, he chose to continue working for the group full time.

"Some people come in with a performance art background, and they learn to appreciate community involvement, others come in for the community involvement area and get introduced to the performance art side.

Two performances will be held today on the front steps of City Hall, one at 11.45 a.m. and a second at 12.45 p.m.

"We'd love to invite people to stop by during their lunch hours and see what we're about."

Today's performance will be a small taste of the full show, to be held tomorrow at Snorkel Park in Dockyard. Admission to all of the shows will be free.
