Wayne Furbert backs call for political unity on violence

The MP whose area suffered the first gun death of 2010 is backing calls for Bermuda's politicians to cast aside their differences and work together on a plan to stop gang violence.

Hamilton West MP Wayne Furbert says church leaders, Police, former gang members and community activists should also be at the table as the Island looks for a solution to seemingly relentless gun warfare.

"We are under attack as a community and no single person has the answer," Mr. Furbert told The Royal Gazette yesterday.

"But we might all have a different piece of the jigsaw which we can put together."

Earlier this week, United Bermuda Party Leader Kim Swan said the Island's politicians needed to "speak as one" to send a strong message to the perpetrators of recent violence.

Mr. Furbert, an Independent MP after quitting the UBP over a year ago, said: "I think at this time particularly we need to have a unifying front on this issue.

"When all of us are searching for answers, we need to put our political affiliations aside to look at how we can do what's best for Bermuda."

On Sunday night, Perry Puckerin, 34, became Bermuda's fourth gun death victim in a month when he was shot inside Hamilton Parish Workman's Club.

Two of the previous three fatal shootings took place in Pembroke, and the other in the West End.

Mr. Furbert said: "This gentleman was not from Hamilton Parish, but it has happened in our parish. We've got to make sure we get on top of this problem. It's now starting to reach more neighbourhoods.

"Clubs in general are having a problem. Hamilton Parish doesn't escape that problem. There are individuals who hang around clubs all day, which is not good for themselves.

"When we read about the mother being shot at in the West End as well, we know we can't sit back anymore. This has brought it to a new level.

"Let's get together and do something about this. We can't be sure that our tourism isn't being affected, and international business as well. It's affecting all of us.

"This is not to attack the Premier or Colonel Burch, or the Governor or the Police service, but if they had all the answers they would be solving it to tomorrow."
