Wear denim today to raise awareness about autism

BASE president Jenny Purvey speaks while Health Minister Nelson Bascome listens before declaring yesterday World Autism Awareness Day on the steps of the Cabinet building.

The challenges of raising an autistic child were highlighted by Health Minister Nelson Bascome yesterday as he pledged Bermuda's support for World Autism Awareness Day.

The Minister said the Island would celebrate the event annually on April 2 and April would also be designated Autism Awareness Month.

Bermuda Autism Support and Education (BASE) estimates that there are more than 100 children and as many as 425 adults here with the brain development disorder, which inhibits the ability to communicate and develop social relationships.

Mr. Bascome, speaking at the Cabinet Office, said: "Raising an autistic child is a challenging and daily reality for many families.

"Autistic persons often have incredible talents and potential and I am pleased to support this important initiative that helps to raise public awareness about autism in our community.

"Awareness is the first step in discouraging stigmatisation and discrimination and the Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring that families of special needs children have access to the necessary health care and social support they may need."

BASE president Jenny Purvey said: "It is vitally important that people are aware of autism and learn to recognise the warning signs in young children.

"Autism is not a mental illness and is not caused by bad parenting. Children with autism are not unruly kids who choose not to behave."

She said the organisation was delighted to have Government's support in raising awareness and helping provide resources for affected families.

BASE is planning a series of autism awareness events throughout April and May, including its annual fundraising denim day today, a panel discussion at Mount Saint Agnes Academy on April 17 and 18 featuring US occupational therapist Julia Harper, of Therapeeds, and a workshop with clinical psychologist Jed Baker on May 30 and 31.

On May 24, 32 members of Mariners Rugby Football Club will run the Bermuda Day half-marathon in aid of BASE.
