Website tributes to murdered mother

Tributes: Shakeya DeRoza

A website honouring the life of the young woman who was murdered last Friday has been created by her uncle.

Family, friends and well-wishers are now invited to post tributes to 23-year-old Shakeya DeRoza on www.shakeyaderoza.com.

Visitors to the website can upload photos, videos and write messages of support to her family.

Wycliffe Williams said he created the website of Saturday as an outlet where people can write directly to Ms DeRoza's mother Judy and sister Shakira.

"We have decided to put up a website but we just want to get the information out to Bermuda so that they can visit the site," he said yesterday.

"There's been so much love and concern that has poured out to Judy and her family and a lot of people still want to connect but they don't know how. The site does that."

Ms DeRoza was named Sunday night by Police as the Sandys mother-of-two who died on Friday.

A 36-year-old Pembroke man believed to be her boyfriend is in Police custody in connection with her death. It is understood he was initially taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after he tried to harm himself, but was discharged to Police.

Neighbours say Ms DeRoza, a corrections officer, ran from her apartment in Paynter Lane to get help from neighbourhood stores, but collapsed in a pool of blood before she could reach them.

Police say they are treating the death as a murder. Last night, a Police spokesman extended condolences to Ms DeRoza's family and friends.

It is anticipated that an autopsy will be performed on the body of the deceased by a forensic pathologist.

On the website, several messages spoke about the kind of person Shakeya was and all of them showed tremendous support to her family.

Kamaria Greenfield wrote: "My thoughts and prayers will always be with you. I can't begin to imagine what you are going through. But I do know that God has always given and will continue to give you the strength you need to carry on.

"Take comfort in the thought that one day you, Shakira and the children will meet Shakeya in heaven and there will be no more crying but joy on that day and forever."

Tonya Edwards said: "Hold fast onto the Lord for he has something in store for you. It will be tough days like you said and questions but continue to pray and ask for prayers, the more received up will bring more comfort and blessings back to you."

A woman named Peggy wrote: "My heart is heavy with your pain and I send all my love and support to your family from mine. Words cannot express how much but just know that we feel your sorrow and if you need anything please feel free to call me."

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011 or the 24-hour confidential Crime Stoppers hot line on 1-800-623-8477.
