Woman admits stealing from employer
A St. George's woman pleaded guilty to six counts of deception when she appeared in Magistrates' Court.
Seanee Smith, 23, of York Street, admitted fraudulently obtaining more than $12,000 from cheques intended for her employer, People's General Contracting.
At the time of the offences between February 1 and February 25, 2008 Smith was employed at the company as a general assistant. Her responsibilities included some financial book-keeping and running errands, the court heard.
Crown counsel Nicole Clarke read the six charges to the court.
Ms Clarke said that sometime between February 1 and February 11, Smith fraudulently obtained $3,000 using a cheque in her employer's name.
On February 11, Smith dishonestly obtained $3,750 from her employer using a forged cheque. On the same day she dishonestly obtained $3,750 from a bank teller, deliberately depriving HSBC and her employer of the money.
Ms Clarke said that the fourth charge occurred between February 1 and February 22. Smith withdrew $3,250 in the name of People's General Contracting during that period.
The final two charges against Smith, the Court was told, involved the same incident on February 25. Smith admitted to deceiving a bank teller and obtaining $3,200 with the intention of permanently depriving her employer and HSBC of the money.
Smith admitted using liquid paper on the cheques, originally made out to her employer, so that she could fill in the information herself. The court was told that she used some of the cash to pay off her electricity and phone bills.
When asked by Magistrate Juan Wolfe why she stole the money Smith claimed to have not been able to help it.
"I had a problem," she said. "I just really like money."
Asked by Mr. Wolfe what she spent all the money on, Smith said: "Nothing clothes maybe."
Mr. Wolfe released Smith on $2,000 bail and ordered her to return to court on June 11 for sentencing. A Social Inquiry Report on Smith is to be completed in the interim.
"We need to find out what is going on here," said Mr. Wolfe. "Because right now you are at the doorstep of prison."
