Cabbie banned from road for drinking and driving

A taxi driver who crashed his cab in front of police was today banned from the road for drinking and driving.Stephen Simmons, 49, from Warwick, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court this morning to driving while impaired.Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney said police were on patrol on Camp Road, Warwick on February 19.The officers saw a taxi travelling in the opposite direction swerve off the road and into bushes. They stopped to ask the driver if he was alright, and noticed he appeared to be unsteady on his feet, and that he smelled of alcohol.Magistrate Juan Wolffe said he was particularly concerned that Simmons was driving his cab while impaired and that he crashed the vehicle.“It could have been more serious. You could have run into another vehicle or a person,” Mr Wolffe said. The magistrate fined Simmons $1,000, issued him ten demerit points and banned him from driving all vehicles for one year.Useful website: www.bps.bm.
