Man to be deported for overstaying visa
A man with his own wanted poster at the Department of Immigration is to be deported after being caught on a minor traffic offence.Jamaican national Joel Ezroy Deans, 30, appeared in Magistrates’ Court after admitting to unlawfully remaining in Bermuda since July 9, 2008.He has been sought by Immigration officials for the last two-and-a-half years.Crown counsel Susan Mulligans said Deans used a false name when police pulled him over on North Shore Road on February 26.There were two outstanding warrants on the name he gave, and Deans was arrested.He admitted his real name at Southside Police Station.Deans later told Immigration inspectors that he overstayed a 21-day tourist visa because he wanted to provide for his children in Jamaica.He would not divulge names of people he had worked for here. He is expected to be sent home later this week.Magistrate Juan Wolffe sentenced Deans to a month’s imprisonment, subject to the execution of his deportation.
