Renaissance Aviation reinstates sacked workers

Renaissance Aviation has come to an agreement with the Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU), ending concerns of a possible strike.According to a joint statement by Renaissance Aviation and the BIU, the majority of the seven staff members released last week will return to work over the next three weeks. The remaining workers released will be able to apply for any vacancies when they become available, and be given favourable consideration over other applicants. The parties also tentatively agreed on an appropriate bargaining unit that will allow for a union recognition ballot. The statment said: “There is now an agreement between the parties on all outstanding matters and no contentious issues remain.”Renaissance Aviation, a private company which provides airport cleaning and other services at LF Wade International airport, released seven staff members last week after they reportedly refused a ten-percent pay cut.BIU leader Chris Furbert said the employees were terminated because they joined the union and were seeking union recognition, leading to allegations of union-busting by the company. On Monday, the BIU gave the company 24 hours to meet several demands, including the rehiring of the workers, warning that a general membership meeting would be called if Renaissance failed to comply, causing speculation of possible industrial action. However, following two days of discussion Renaissance Aviation, assisted by the Bermuda Employers Council, came to an agreement with the union. The joint statement read: “Both parties are committed to ensuring that the airport operations of Renaissance Aviation continue smoothly and harmoniously with a view to ensuring the continued economic success of the company and the continued employment of the staff.”
