Three music legends enter Hall of Fame
Three Bermudian music legends were honoured yesterday as they were inducted into the Bermuda Music Hall of Fame.Pianist and poet Alvin Brangman, pianist Norma Brown-Raynor and the late saxophonist Earlston Smith were each inducted by Government MP Dale Butler.Mr Smith began to play music at eight years old, and by 18 he was performing with Al Davis. While Mr Smith died in 2008, Mr Butler played a recording in which he described the ups and downs of life as a musician. He said he would have to ride a bicycle to performances with his saxophone held between his legs. His daughter, Corene Smith, said: “You know my father as a musician. We know him as a provider and a father.”She asked for the public’s assistance in tracking down an eight-track recording made when he performed with the Aldano Sextette. “We know it is out there somewhere, and we need to find it,” she said.Mr Brangman, who began performing with the Four Spots as a teenager, told the crowd of friends and family that his favourite part of performing had always been the audience.Mrs Brown-Raynor, the current organist and pianist at Heard Chapel, performed for 19 years with the popular Aldano Sextette.
