UK paper, regional BBC pick up story about availability of savoury pies in Bermuda
Bermuda has recently garnered the attention of overseas media because of items sold in one of our supermarkets.
In the last week, both BBC Lincolnshire and the Leicester Mercury have run stories about Lincolnshire sausages and Pukka Pies being available at local grocery stores.
The series of stories began when Tim Smith, a senior reporter with
The Royal Gazette, mentioned to Tom Pegden, a friend who is deputy business editor with the Leicester Mercury, that he had found Pukka Pies here.
Englishman Mr Smith was familiar with the popular UK brand of savoury pies from back home.
The conversation sparked an article that appeared in Tuesday's edition of the Leicester Mirror under the headline ‘Bermuda Pie Angle'.
The next day, the story was picked up by BBC Lincolnshire, who wrote an article about Lincolnshire sausages being available at The Supermart on Front Street.
Simon Tuxworth, the head butcher at the grocery store, agreed it was bizarre the store's sausages had made the news abroad.
“It's not much of a story really,” he said. “We've been doing it for years. With the amount of expats on the Island, it makes sense to stock the kinds of things they are looking for.”
