Taxi Authority Review Committee holds second meeting

About 30 taxi workers gathered at Clearwater Middle School to air their concerns on the industry’s future. It was the second meeting of the Taxi Authority Review Committee (TARC).Questions were fielded by TARC chairman Neville Tyrrell, and St David’s MP Lovitta Foggo, who is also chairwoman of the Public Service Vehicles Licensing Board.Ms Foggo told the taxi workers that TARC’s aim was simply to get their input.“This is about having a self-regulating industry under the Taxi Authority,” she said. One driver responded: “Everything TCD [the Transport Control Department] does right now should be done by the Taxi Authority. What we’re talking about now is the scope it’s going to have.“I think that initially, all recommendations should be considered. It might be a challenge but one of the first steps, if we decide to have an authority, we should get all our recommendations out and vote on them.”Driver Cliff Savoury added: “The taxi industry is for entrepreneurs. I want guidelines, but I don’t want to limit my business.”The TARC committee is preparing recommendations to put before Transport Minister Terry Lister, who formed the group on February 20 to determine if a taxi authority is needed for Bermuda. The committee will report to Mr Lister at the end of April.Mr Darrell told the audience: “TCD wants to get out of the regulating business, so that you can regulate yourselves.”Driver Dennis Hollis answered: “Right now we’re regulated but we’re not organised. That’s why we need to have an authority.”Recommendations raised from incentives to improve business, a payment system to set up pensions for taxi drivers, discounts on fuel, a liaison officer with restaurants and other establishments to coordinate pick-ups and a legal representative.Drivers also suggested a complaints board, and a code of conduct for how people hail taxis. The committee’s next fact-finding meeting is scheduled for March 22, in the TCD boardroom, at 9.30am. The public is invited to attend and share its views.Useful web link: www.gov.bm.
